Vocal Workshop with Len Tobin’s “The Voice Squad”
- “Red leather, yellow leather” – say that 5 times fast!
- “Peggy who?”
- What a mug!
- “You know you need unique New York!”
- Laughter is a great way to loosen up!
In January 2012, the cast of “Mugsy Sent Me!” joined Len Tobin’s “The Voice Squad” for a fun and educational workshop on developing a New York accent. They learned tongue twisters like “Red Leather, Yellow Leather” and “Peggy Babcock” (try saying these 5 times fast); New Yorker expressions like “Eh!” and “Forgetaboutit!”; and common sound changes in words like
“walk” (it becomes “woo-awk”) and park (it becomes “pah…k”).
As you can tell by our photo gallery, everyone had a good time! Thanks, Len!
Len has vast experience as a voice acting coach teaching people of all ages. As he will tell you, the great thing about voice acting is that it doesn’t matter how old you are or what you look like – he’s personally done voices ranging from a 6 year old boy to an 80 year old man, commercials for Tops as a penguin, a leprechaun and the Easter bunny and a variety of other voices for fun and for pay! He’s a great teacher and whether you’re interested in finding a paid voice gig or just having fun doing voice acting, he’s the person to know!

Here’s what some of our participants had to say about the workshop:
“Thank you so much for working with us in helping to develop our characters for
“Mugsy Sent Me!”, especially with the Brooklyn Accent. Not only did you provide us with information regarding how to make our voices sound more authentic, but you also made us think a lot about developing our character and just having fun with it!”
“I had so much fun, and I especially liked the improv we did at the end.
I have gotten more comfortable with the cast and my abilities because of this.”
“I love the fact we got to actually record ourselves!
You were so welcoming and outgoing, you made me feel right at home, thank you!”
“The tongue twisters were very interesting!
It made me really loosen up and just have fun with everything.
You made the experience something I will never forget, thank you so much!”
